Editor’s note: 👋 Jennifer here. I happened to be watching the coverage live (or 1 min. delayed) on Instagram’s realnewsnobullshit feed. I immediately began shaking as I saw Trump get shot. I saw him go down. The commentator, also seeing this for the first time, said what I was thinking. Then I saw Trump raise his fist. Since it was live, I did not know if that was his final effort… before death. Thankfully it was not. All this to say: ANYONE WATCHING WOULD KNOW TRUMP WAS SHOT. From my experience in mainstream media (CNN and tabloid news), my guess is that mainstream outlets did not know who to call. Likely they didn’t know a stringer/reporter at the event. I’m sure their newsrooms were confused and scrambling: Who had the story/the live feed/the video? (They would have been thinking “which newsrooms" not “which accounts” had the story.) 𝕏, and even Instagram, emerged as the new leaders in breaking news.
